The Tampa Bay Fire concluded it's 2009 season with impressive performances at the Florida United Lacrosse Cup Championships on November 21-22, 2009. Ending the season on a "high-note" during a season that had many highlights was exciting for many of the Fire teams. Of note, was the Fire's Red team victory over the clubs South Tampa Select team. Overcoming a one-goal loss in the qualifying rounds against the same South Tampa Select team, the Red team fought a tough battle that seesawed back-and-forth with the lead changing hands multiple times until late in the second half when the Red team using some innovative deceptions pulled ahead for good.
Although the Fire's system emphasizes player development over team wins, the excellent performance of Fire teams reflects the convergence of player performance and team performance as the players refine their skill levels, game knowledge, athletic conditioning, and psychological preparation to compete at the highest levels. The Fire's vaunted player development system continues to yield tremendous player improvements and this year's Gold team will place over 40% of it's players in college lacrosse programs next year!
